In this section we will be giving an overview of our research of the stories of the Goddesses within the Norse texts and mythology
Daughters of Freyja
The story of Menglod, the Queen and healer of Lyfjaberg is recounted in the poetic Edda under the title ‘The Sayings of Folsvinn’.
Her story has been negated and turned into a ‘love match’, a Medieval Romance. The story of a great healer is narrated by men - her Uncle, and her would be husband, Svipdag - and has been reduced by patriarchy to nothing more than a healer of women with women’s problems until she is married off.
So in line with authors such as Amy Jeffs in her book titled ‘Storyland’, here at Daughters of Freyja we reclaim the story of Menglod, the heroine, and we give her a voice.
Our story of Menglod has been reconstructed using detail from ‘The Sayings of Folsvinn’ and much of the information contained can be found in the original text. The narrative though, is written with an emphasis on the female voice.
The story of Menglod- Queen of Lyfyjaberg, will be available in full soon.
Daughters of Freyja will be inviting you to an evening of storytelling. You will be invited to cosy up, as in the days of old, and listen to Her story given by our very own story teller.
If you can’t attend locally, we will be offering a storytelling experience online soon.
